This is an essay-level expression of Borrowed Cognition. Its specific contribution is the shift in responsibility when tools reduce execution friction: ease does not remove cognition; it moves the burden toward intention, judgment, and agency.

We invent tools to make learning easier.

Then we panic that easier means learning won’t happen.

Calculators were supposed to ruin math.

Writing was supposed to ruin memory.

Now AI is apparently coming for thinking.

Thinking seems intact.

I’m not especially worried about the tool.

I’m more interested in what happens when execution gets easier.

When something that used to take effort suddenly takes less, the friction shifts. And friction is where a lot of learning used to hide.

AI can make an argument sound polished in seconds. It can structure, tighten, and smooth. You can arrive somewhere quickly.

But arriving isn’t the same as navigating.
